Office block De Volharding, The Hague, 1928. Architect: Jan Willem Eduard Buijs. Photographer: unknown.
Being both an architect and a socialist, Jan Buijs considered building as his contribution toward a better world. The Cooperative Society De Volharding (The Perseverance) was part of the evolution that would result in a more beautiful world, a better life for all and a society where people would be treated as equals.
One of the major requirements for this building was that it had to provide as many opportunities as possible for advertising. Thanks to a skeleton of concrete columns and supporting floors, the façade could be constructed chiefly of glass. By day, the glass let natural light into the offices, by night, it let electric light shine through to the outside. Jan Buijs turned the whole façade into one huge illuminated billboard. He designed built-in illuminated signs consisting of an aluminum casing with milk glass in which zinc letters, digits, and figures could be suspended.
