- De cloisonné-tegel met dit decor is lang in gebruik geweest en is rond 1955 opnieuw uitgegeven als kersttegel. De oude traditie wil dat de pelikaan haar jongen voedt met het eigen bloed, een voorbeeld van opofferingsgezindheid, en daarom geldt deze vogel als een symbool voor Christus offerdood (zie ook tegeltableau van de kruisweg uit de Louisekerk, inv.nr. 3606).
