- De Surinaamse selfmade man, journalist, politicus en amateur-fotograaf Julius Eduard Muller leefde van 1846 tot 1902 in Paramaribo. Hij was van grote betekenis voor de economische ontwikkeling van Suriname gedurende het laatste kwart van de 19e eeuw. Tijdens de goudkoorts stak hij zich in goudondernemingen en kwam in conflict met Gouverneur Van Sypesteyn, waardoor zijn ambtelijke carrière werd afgebroken. Hij zocht zijn recht in Nederland, waarbij hij grotere aandacht wist te vestigen op Suriname. In januari 1895 werd in Paramaribo door Muller een 'Photogrammen' tentoonstelling gehouden. Het was een verzameling van 300 zeer uiteenlopende foto's, die hij na de tentoonstelling schonk aan het toenmalige Koloniale Museum te Haarlem onder voorwaarde dat daarmee een rondreis gemaakt zou worden om het Nederlandse publiek kennis van Suriname te laten nemen. Muller hoopte mensen te interesseren voor vestiging in Suriname. Hij portretteerde families van Boeren die vanaf 1845 als landbouwers in Suriname woonden. Uitgegeven naar aanleiding van de tentoonstelling 'Julius Muller, Suriname 100 jaar geleden' ter ere van het vijftigjarig bestaan van de Stichting Surinaams Museum op 29 april 1997.
