De joodse student David Koker (27 november 1921) woonde met zijn ouders en broertje in Amsterdam tot hij in de nacht van 11 februari 1943 van huis werd gehaald en naar kamp Vught gebracht. Tijdens zijn gevangenschap hield hij een dagboek bij, dat in stukjes en beetjes het kamp uit wordt gesmokkeld.
David schreef ook gedichten, dit alles met grote opmerkzaamheid en inzicht in de barre omstandigheden. In het concentratiekamp gaf hij les aan andere joodse kinderen. Ook werkte hij voor het Philips-Kommando. In juni 1944 wordt het gezin op transport gesteld naar Auschwitz.Tijdens een ziekentransport naar Dachau eind februari 1945 sterft David Koker. De moeder van David en zijn broer Max overleven de oorlog.
Het dagboek van David Koker is in 1977 uitgegeven met een voorwoord van Karel van het Reve.
