- Biografie: Christiaan Eykman (11-08-1858, Utrecht) studeerde aan de UvA en legde in 1883 het staatsexamen af, promoveerde in hetzelfde jaar en vertrok naar Nederlands-Indië als officier van gezondheid te Tjilatjap en te Padang Sidempuan (res. Tapanuli, n.w. Sumatra). In 1885 ging hij met ziekteverlof naar Nederland waar hij zich toelegde op de bacteriologie. In 1886 vertrok hij weer naar Nederlands-Indië en sloot zich aan bij de beriberi-commissie o.l.v. Pekelharing en Winkler. In 1889 werd in Batavia het Laboratorium voor Pathologische Anatomie en Bacteriologie opgericht, later het Eykman-Instituut genoemd. Eykman werd hiervan directeur en dokter van de Jawa-school. Hij verrichte proefnemingen over polyneuritis bij hoenderen, waarbij hij een verband vermoedde met het menselijke beri-beri. Deze onderzoekingen vormden de grondslag voor de kennis van vitaminen. in 1898 keerde hij terug naar Nederland en werd hoogleraar aan de Universiteit van Utrecht in de hygiëne, medische politie en gerechtelijke geneeskunde. In 1929 ontving hij de Nobelprijs voor fysiologie en geneeskunde op grond van zijn onderzoekingen betreffende de beri-beri.
