Around 1900 the Amsterdam professor of botany Hugo de Vries developed his ‘mutation theory’, in which he argued that evolution takes place in small jumps ('mutations'). In the case of the common evening primrose, these mutations seemed visible; new properties could indeed emerge from one generation to the next. Many of the 'new species' are depicted on the charts he used when lecturing. In the end, the alterations of the common evening primrose turned out to have a different cause, but the mutation theory itself did not lose its value. Hugo de Vries owes his world-wide renown to his theory.
