- Description
- The map of the district water board (hoogheemraadschap) Uitwaterende Sluizen in Kennemerland en Westfriesland was produced by surveyor Johannes Dou (1642-1682) in 1680. Coenraet Decker (1651-1685) engraved the image of the map, with Abraham Deur cutting the letters. This map is a typical example of the cartography of river maps. In order to be able to protect the lower area in Holland against the sea and rivers, there were several water boards in West-Netherlands, reponsible for the management and care of the territory. To achieve this, accurate general maps were indispensible. These maps were often decorated with the coats of arms of the representatives of the polder board. The representative character was very important. So much so that this map was reissued several times during the 17th and 18th centuries. The image on the maps was not changed, but the coats of arms were adapted. Judging by these coats of arms we can determine that the map was published between 1682 and 1683.
