English fliers
The poster "English fliers know no mercy …" had already been produced by the occupier in 1940. Its timing alone caused this German propaganda to miss its mark entirely, because the German bombardment of Rotterdam was still fresh in everyone's memory. Posters were ripped off of walls in outraged anger, and the following poem was widely circulated illegally:
"The fliers were approaching as sweetly as a lamb,to visit with compassion our great city of Rotterdam. They dropped their bombs on top of it full of love and kindly grace. The fliers that know mercy have left Rotterdam ablaze."
"A harsh cry is now arising out of Rotterdam's remains;see and remember what happened here, who exacted 'Mercy' on these plains.Citizens, open up your mouths, and let it now be heard:the fliers who know mercy are those by whom Rotterdam was burned!"
