After the conquest of Dutch Indonesia, the Japanese immediately launched a major propaganda offensive. This propaganda was aimed at the Indonesian communities, including the Indonesian Dutch. They were meant to realise that they were Asians, that Western influences were to be eradicated, and that Japanese leadership in Asia had been established.
Similarly to the British and German V-campaigns of 1941, simple symbols were chosen here as well. The triple A was meant to become a universally recognized symbol. The letters stood for Asia tyahaya, Asia pelindung and Asia penimpin (Japan is: Asia's Light, Asia's Protector, Asia's Leader). The third A was the most important one and was therefore always printed slightly larger than the others. But in spite of large public rallies, countless radio broadcasts and many colourful posters, the triple A was no success, and the campaign was cancelled after just a few months.
