House style Ministry of Education, Culture and Science

In 1983, Total Design was commissioned to design a completely new house style for the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. This ministry is unique in that its mission includes a specific target group: the youth. Total Design wanted the house style to fit this audience.

The logo the agency created was made up of the ministry’s name and three geometric figures. Taking this logo as starting point, Total Design developed a shape language that could be used in a flexible way. This did not produce a uniform house style, but it remained recognizable in spite of the great variety of forms and colors in which in was applied.

This house style clearly illustrates the work of the new generation of designers, who had broken with the functional designs from the past. The results are less neutral and not as timeless as those of the preceding period.
