Municipality of Simpelveld (Province of Limburg)
The district council of Simpelveld used existing relief coupons for the unemployed when issuing emergency money. These coupons had values of 50 cents and 1 guilder. The irrelevant text on these coupons was crossed out and, where necessary, adapted.
It is striking that the district council did not allow owners of these banknotes to buy alcoholic drinks with it. This rule was probably relevant for the coupons that had been issued by the Burgerlijk Armenbestuur (civil poverty administration). It is, however, rather strange with regard to coupons used as banknotes.
