- Paul François Roos werd in 1751 geboren in Amsterdam en vertrok in 1769 naar Suriname. Vermoedelijk begonnen als blankofficier op een plantage werd hij later directeur, plantage-eigenaar en koopman. Roos' poëzie is zeer gevarieerd en omvat oden, hymnen, pastorales, heldendichten enzovoort. Een groot deel van zijn poëzie bestaat uit gelegenheidsdichtwerk. Zo dichtte Roos bij het aantreden van nieuwe gouverneurs, bij het eeuwfeest van de synagoge op Jodensavanne, bij plechtigheden van verschillende vrijmetselaarsloges. Roos bezingt Suriname in zijn poëzie als een 'lustplantaadjen' en noemt Paramaribo 'de paerel van het grootsch America'. P.F. Roos was enkele jaren voorzitter van het genootschap De Surinaamsche Lettervrinden. Dit is het titelblad en inhoudsopgave van het eerste deel van 'Eerstelingen van Surinaamsche mengelpoëzy' van Paul François Roos, verschenen in 1783. In 1878 verscheen een tweede deel en in 1789 het derde. Later publiceerde Roos twee verzameledities van zijn werk, in 1802 en 1804.
