Een dagboekje met de titel"Triest Relaas" van de hand van Officier van Gezondheid A.J.P. Borstlap. In zijn ongepubliceerde herinneringen getiteld "O'reksama, Triest relaas van een krijgsgevangenschap bij de Jappen van 13 januari 1942 tot 13 september 1945" schrijft hij er het volgende over: "Triest Relaas" is mijn dagboekje. Het is maar klein, 10 bij 13 cm, maar telt 160 bladzijden van wit kastpapier, ingebonden in karton met een zwart linnenband. Het begint op 8 december 1941, de dag dat de oorlog uitbrak. Ik begon dit dagboek bij te houden toen ik in de gevangenis van Manado zat. Ik had, na mijn fouillering door de Japanners, een stompje potlood overgehouden en begon daarmee op stukjes papier, de binnenkanten van sigarettendoosjes e.d. heel korte aantekeningen te maken. Wat later kreeg ik een klein zaknotitieboekje in mijn bezig, waarin ik mijn Japanse lessen optekende, waartussen ik korte cryptische dagboekaantekeningen schreef. De Japanners hadden duidelijk gemaakt dat het maken en behouden van aantekeningen als spionage werd beschouwd met als straf: onthoofding. Toen we maanden later in Makassar kwamen waar een veel gematigder controle bestond, begon ik uit de reeds gemaakte aantekeningen, die ik had kunnen meesmokkelen, een echt chronologisch dagboek te maken. Er was daar "over de pagger" (omheining) een flinke handel en ik bestelde bij mijn vriend Wim de Kiviet, die ik daar aantrof, een rol wit kastpapier, inkt, pennetjes, een klein waterverfdoosje en penselen. Daarmee maakte ik doen dit dagboek, klein van formaat zodat het in de zak paste en goed kon worden opgeborgen. Het liep tot 23 april 1942, de dag dat we in Makassar aankwamen. Daarmee kwam ik, alleen de rechterbladzijden gebruikend, tot bladzijde 70. In het kamp Makassar was zoveel te doen en waren de omstandigheden aanvankelijk zo weinig schokkend en bizar, dat ik er niet toe kwam om dit dagboek als zodanig voort te zetten. Wel begin on, nu van achter af aan, met potlood aantekeningen te maken. Dat betrof alles betreffende de mensen uit Manado, belangrijke gebeurtenissen in het kamp met data e.d.. Dat waren er in '42 maar een paar. Maar in '43 toen de Amerikaanse verkenningen en bombardementen begonnen, waren dat er veel meer en in '44 waren het soms dagelijkse aantekeningen voornamelijk van vliegbewegingen. Toen door de ontdekking van een "ondergrondse" in het kamp de controle plotseling zeer verscherpt was en intens was geworden, zat mijn boekje soms wekenlang verborgen in een schuilplaats onder de kegelbaan van de officierskantine. Dat was wel verboden terrein, maar lag vlak naast ons noodhospitaaltje waar ik werkte. Nu en dan haalde ik het, als ik nachtdienst had, te voorschijn voor het bijschrijven van de op vodjes papier bijgehouden gebeurtenissen van de afgelopen dagen. Toen we verhuisden naar het Bamboekamp, werd het in een zending apothekersartikelen meegesmokkeld en ging daar weer "onder de grond". Daar dit kamp echter in een moeras lag, maakte ik een bovengrondse schuilplaats in een houten boekensteun op de enige boekenplank in de doktersbarak, waar we enkele gekregen medische boeken bewaarden. Deze boekensteun bestond uit een zwaar teakhouten blok dat was uitgehold, waarop een gesneden houden mensenscheden was bevestigd. De Japanners hebben een afschouw van alles wat met de dood te maken heeft en bleven hier dan ook steeds van af. Daar heeft het boekje tot het eind van de oorlog ingezeten.
Toen in het begin van 1945 de ellende in het Bamboekamp op zijn hoogst was, wilde ik alles wat er gebeurde weer vastleggen voor later en op 29 januari begon ik weer dagelijks potloodaantekeningen te maken, nu op de blanco linkerbladzijden. Zo beschreef ik 23 bladzijden en maakte op 30 juni mijn laatste notitie, daar we toen wel wisten dat we gingen vertrekken. Daar we een strenge visitatie verwachten en ik het dus niet kon meenemen, moest het goed worden verborgen. Mijn collega Neyhoff wist ervan en beloofde er verder voor te zorgen, zodat het mij in het begin '46, in Melbourne waar ik toen recupereerde, weer bereikte.
