Het dagboek werd in maart 1945 in een verzegelde fles bij een boomwortel in het officierenkamp Kanchanabury begraven. Het was namelijk levensgevaarlijk om potlood en papier te bezitten. In september 1945, kort na de bevrijding werd de fles op aanwijzing van de heer Rappard door een Japans corvee opgegraven. Het boek was echter aangevreten door de termieten. De heer Rappard heeft daarom in Bangkok het gehele dagboek overgeschreven op Japanse formulieren in verband met de schaarste aan papier. Uit het dagboek ontbreken bladzijden, die gebruikt zijn door de 'Allied War Criminal Board. De schrijver en ir. P.C. van Fluyt reisden alle krijgsgevangenenkampen af om oorlogsmisdadigers terug te zien en op te sporen, echter met gering resultaat.
