The office block of the Oranje Nassau Mines (interior) in Heerlen, 1931. Architect: Dirk Roosenburg. Photographer: unknown.
The new office block had to meet a number of requirements. The building itself had to be impervious to subsidence, since the ground under the building was unstable due to the mining operations.
Moreover, the arrangement of the offices had to be adaptable to the ever changing organization of the mining company. Roosenburg designed a building made of light, flexible materials, able to absorb any tremors in the soil. Also, a steel skeleton made supporting walls superfluous and, as a result, the layout of the offices could be rearranged whenever desired. The lightweight partitions consisted of a frame filled with either glass or solid panels. The size of the office units could thus be enlarged or reduced by 1.80 meters (about 5 feet) either way, whenever necessary.
