Leonce and Lena (design: Anthon Beeke).
As large format lithographs became affordable in the 1970s, it became possible to work with photographs that filled the entire screen. Anthon Beeke introduced this type of poster in 1979.
Anthon Beeke’s work shows that Dutch theater, just as Dutch society, became tougher, more cynical and cruder in the early 1970s after the playful and idealistic 1960s. In those years Beeke did a lot of work for the Zuidelijk Toneel Globe (Southern Globe Theater), where artistic director Gerardjan Rijnders repeatedly shocked audiences with his rigorous interpretations of classic play texts.
