- This painting shows the view from Van Gogh’s room in the hospital in Saint-Rémy. 'In this reaper - a vague form fighting like a demon to finish his work in the heat of the day - I then saw the image of death, in the sense that humanity represents the corn that has to be mown,' he wrote of the work. Yet not all was sombre, as the sun 'bathes everything in a fine golden light.'
