- Een aquarel van een barakinterieur met kerstboom. Links een opgetuigde kerstboom op een lage tafel. Aan de voet van de kerstboom een miniatuur kerkje. Links en rechts slaapplaatsen in twee rijen boven elkaar. Langs de slaapplaatsen hangt kerstversiering. Rechtsonder de tekst: "'Maruyama' Kobe". Geheel onder: "Kerstmis 1944". Toevoeging maker: Wij hadden reeds vroeg in het jaar besloten, dat we met Kerstmis 1944 een kerstboom in de onze barak wilden hebben. De boom op zichzelf was niet zo moeilijk, er groeiden genoeg sparretjes op het terrein van het kamp. Het uitgraven moest op het laatste moment, uit het zicht van de Japanners, geschieden. Voor de versiering verzamelden we alle mogelijke stukjes afvalkoper, blik, kortom alles wat schitterde en op de werf te vinden was. Als kaarsjes dachten wij aan pijpjes bamboe waarin gloeilampjes uit staaflantaarns waren geplaatst, die in serie geschakeld, met een van de lichtpunten in de barak verbonden moesten worden. De lampjes werden 'en masse' uit de staaflantaarns, die de Japanse werklui nogal vaak lieten liggen, ontvreemd. Tegen Kersttijd hadden we een voldoende aantal. Toen de Japanse wacht op kerstavond zijn ronde maakte, was het even stil waarna hij uitriep 'Kore wa kirei desu' dwz 'Dit is prachtig'. Bijschrift bij een kopie van deze tekening in het NIOD: "Kerstmis 1944. Hier een interieur van een der hutten met kerstversiering. De hutten waren ingericht met tweeverdiepingsbunks aan weerszijden. In de wintertijd meestal onverwarmd. De kerstversiering was bijeengebracht door alle honderd Hollanders, gestolen en meegesmokkeld, alle Japanse controle ten spijt. Meenemen van artikelen, hoe klein ook, was streng verboden."
