- Turf (gedroogde stukken veen) was in Nederland een belangrijke brandstof. Het waren voornamelijk Friezen en Hollanders die aan het eind van de 16de eeuw het initiatief namen om de veengebieden te ontginnen. De afbeelding van turf bij het wapen van Friesland onderstreept het belang van deze brandstofwinning voor de provincie.
