"Buka warriors in ambush"
It is quite obvious that this picture is not authentic: the scene was stage-managed. In the past, however, this was not considered very important: people were still so much in awe of the new technique that photography was a guarantee for authenticity in their eyes. So, museums also acquired these kinds of photographs in order to further the study of other communities. This photograph was probably taken by Richard Parkinson, a Danish explorer and anthropologist. He collected objects and took photographs in Papua New Guinea, part of the Melanesian Archipelago on behalf of the private Godeffory Museum, the predecessor of the Hamburg Anthropological Museum.

- Description
— SO/Wonu Veijs (06-04-2011)
