- Description
- Just as earlier in Scheveningen, in Saintes-Maries Van Gogh became captivated by the simplicity of the modest fishermen’s houses. The characteristic whitewashed 'cabanes' were covered with straw and frequently rounded off on the north side to protect them from the harsh gales of the mistral. A cross was often set on top of the roof.
