- Yama is de gevreesde god van de onderwereld die een knots draagt en de bozen straft. Hij is de koning der gerechtigheid en op Bali vereert men dan ook als Sang Hiang Dharma (de gerechtigheid) en Pretarama (de dodenvorst) die de klagende zielen van de bozen doet kwellen door de helledieren. Na lengte van jaren eindigt de straf en volgt wedergeboorte in een of ander dier, nederiger naarmate de straf zwaarder was, om soms na een eeuwenlange loutering weer mens te worden. De brave zielen worden met muziek en feest beloond en gaan, omringd door hemelingen, de hemel in. In India is zijn beeld groen en rood, op Bali wit en met een donderkeil in de hand. Op het hoofd de priesterlijke hoofdtooi, over de borst het borstsnoer. Dit beeld behoort tot een groep van 28 beelden (15-156 t/m 15-182b), gezamenlijk een pantheon van Balinese godheden vormend, dat getoond werd op de Nederlandse koloniale afdeling op de wereldtentoonstelling te Parijs in 1900. Speciaal voor deze tentoonstelling heeft C.M. Pleyte, conservator van 's Rijks Etnografisch Museum in Leiden, deze beelden op Bali laten vervaardigen. Met behulp van enkele priesters selecteerde hij de relevante beelden die vervolgens door Balinese houtsnijders werden nagemaakt.
