- Description
- Indra, de duizend-ogige, beveelt de donder en de bliksem en schenkt de vruchtbaarheid brengende regens. Hij rijdt op zijn olifant en is gewapend met lansschicht en donderkeil. Als heer des hemels bewoont hij de berg Meroe, vanwaar hij beveelt over de andere goden vanuit zijn rijk (Indra loka). Schaduwrijke bomen en welriekende bloemen verlustigen er de bewoners, tegelijk met hemelnymfen en muzikanten. In deze voor-hemel gaan de stofdragende priesters regelrecht binnen zonder door Yama gericht te zijn, terwijl de zielen van andere stervelingen slechts in Indra's hemel komen wanneer zij daartoe dadelijk of na loutering waardig zijn bevonden. Ook de vrouwen die vroeger bij het overlijden van hun echtgenoot de vrijwillige vuurdood kozen en vrouwen met hun volgelingen, die zich in de strijd opofferen, zijn waardig de hemel in te gaan. Indra met zijn donderkeil draagt de gelung kurung, de hoofdtooi van priesters en vertoont in zijn gelaatstrekken en met zijn lichtgele huidskleur de aristocraat onder de Baliers, de hooggeplaatste. Hij is getooid met pols- en armringen, borstsnoer, oorhangers en veel goud op zijn kleding. Voorts draagt hij de schouderbedekking en een broek die eveneens tot het kostuum van toneelspelers behoort. Dit beeld behoort tot een groep van 28 beelden (15-156 t/m 15-182b), gezamenlijk een pantheon van Balinese godheden vormend, dat getoond werd op de Nederlandse koloniale afdeling op de wereldtentoonstelling te Parijs in 1900. Speciaal voor deze tentoonstelling heeft C.M. Pleyte, conservator van 's Rijks Etnografisch Museum in Leiden, deze beelden op Bali laten vervaardigen. Met behulp van enkele priesters selecteerde hij de relevante beelden die vervolgens door Balinese houtsnijders werden nagemaakt.
