- De woningen in Hollandse tuin liggen op het Bickerseiland in Amsterdam. Van oudsher vonden er industriƫle activiteiten plaats, die in het centrum geen plaats meer hadden. Ook de arbeiders verhuisden naar dit eiland. Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog heeft het gebied veel schade geleden, waardoor bedrijven weer opgebouwd moesten worden. De bewoners van het eiland protesteerden hier echter tegen en zagen veel meer een woonfunctie voor het gebied weggelegd. Architect P. de Ley kreeg opdracht om 400 nieuwe woningen te ontwerpen waar zowel grote als kleine gezinnen zouden kunnen wonen. In 1981 werd begonnen met de bouw. Naast een aantal HAT-eenheden verschenen er bedrijfsruimten en culturele gebouwen. Het verkeer probeerde men zoveel mogelijk buiten de woonwijk te houden. Zoals op de foto te zien is, zijn er weinig parkeerplaatsen voor auto's beschikbaar. Dit werd vooral gedaan om de jeugd de nodige Speelruimte te geven. Aan de verlaagde kade hebben twee kunstenaars, P. Engels en S. Koren, een kunstwerk in African black-graniet gemaakt. Zij noemen het de 'omgevallen boom', maar in de volksmond noemt men het de 'walvis', verwijzend naar een vroegere scheepswerf.
