- Hida designed the steam engine for the Chiyodagata maru, the first steamship to be built in Japan. In 1864, Hida traveled to Europe to conduct research. He wanted to build a shipyard in the city of Yokosuka and was looking for models. In the following years, Hida held various important positions inthe Japanese government. In 1885, he was given a high post at the imperial court.
