- Al in de 19de eeuw trok Volendam de belangstelling van veel schrijvers en kunstenaars. In het dorpje meenden zij het oude en traditionele Holland te herkennen. Hun belangstelling ging uit naar mensen, kleding, feesten en folklore. Ook A.P. Schotel heeft in Volendam geschilderd. Eerst tijdens een bezoek in 1920 en later toen hij er vanaf 1926 twee jaar in een vissershuisje aan de Berend Demmerstraat woonde. Zijn belangstelling ging minder uit naar de folklore dan naar het weergeven van het water, de lucht, de schepen en in het bijzonder de botter. Ik wil den botter volkomen in mijn macht zien te krijgen en dan is er maar een weg: in Volendam gaan wonen, tusschen de Volendammers leven, hun taal, gewoonten en 't visschersleven in zijn geheel beter leren kennen...", luidt een citaat van hem. Daadwerkelijk heeft hij deze visie in praktijk gebracht, zoals de vele schilderijen in de museumverzameling tonen. Deels zijn deze na 1932 geschilderd, toen het karakter van het Zuiderzeegebied door de Afsluiting snel veranderde.
