- In 1978 koos ESA (European Space Agency) drie astronauten uit voor hun eerste bemande ruimtevaartproject, genaamd Spacelab D-1. Het waren de Zwitser Claude Nicollier, de Duitser Ulf Merbold en de Nederlander Wubbo Ockels. In oktober en november 1985 draaiden ze aan boord van de later verongelukte Challenger een week lang om de aarde, waarbij meer dan 70 verschillende experimenten werden uitgevoerd in vijf wetenschappelijke gebieden. Ockels was hiermee Nederlands eerste astronaut. Via het videoscherm in het German Space Operation Controlcenter (GSOC) in Oberpfaffenhofen is Ockels te zien. Er wordt een experiment uitgevoerd: zijn oogfuncties worden gemeten.
