Begemann, born in Lippe, Germany, studied in Groningen, The Netherlands and was successively pastor in Wijbelsum, Wirdum and Emden. A portrait was probably made of him because of the fact that his career ended as pastor of the High German community in Amsterdam. He was portrayed by C.H. Hodges, specialist in ‘black art’, as the technique used to make this portrait is called.
