Den Uyl spreekt bezetters toe

- Joop den Uyl, lijsttrekker van de PvdA, sprak op 18 mei 1981 de bezetters van de schrijfmachinefabriek Remington in Den Bosch toe. Het bedrijf was sinds 14 mei 1981 bezet, omdat het met sluiting werd bedreigd. De goeddraaiende schrijfmachinefabriek was in de financiƫle problemen gekomen door wanbeleid van het Amerikaanse moederbedrijf Remington Rand. Op de foto: de slogan 'vecht voor je werk' was van de Industriebond FNV. De man met de witte band om zijn arm was van de ordedienst van de bezetters. Den Uyl beloofde de werknemers van Remington dat hij bij de plaatsvervangend ambassadeur van de Verenigde Staten in Nederland en VVD-minister Van Aardenne van Economische Zaken voor het openhouden van de fabriek zou pleiten. Van Aardenne ging met de Amerikaanse aandeelhouders van Remington over het behoud van de fabriek in Den Bosch onderhandelen. Den Uyl maakte zich boos over de kapitalistische houding van de aandeelhouders, die het goed renderende bedrijf in Den Bosch wilden sluiten. Niet alleen de banen van de 825 werknemers van Remington, maar ook 525 arbeidsplaatsen bij toeleveringsbedrijven en sociale werkplaatsen die afhankelijk waren van de schrijfmachinefabriek, werden bedreigd. De sluiting van Remington zou een verdubbeling van de werkloosheid rond Den Bosch betekenen. Op 26 mei 1981 werd de fabriek failliet verklaard. Pogingen om het bedrijf aan een Arabische beleggingsgroep te verkopen werden door de eigenaren van het Amerikaanse moederbedrijf geblokkeerd. Na het faillissement nam de beleggingsgroep de schrijfmachinefabriek toch over. Ongeveer 300 werknemers konden hierdoor weer aan de slag. Voor de ruim 500 medewerkers die niet konden blijven, was er een afvloeiingsregeling. De Nederlanders kregen veel meer inspraak in het bedrijfsbeleid dan zij onder Amerikaans bewind hadden.
