- Vishnu is de tweede godheid van de Hindoe-drie-eenheid (trimurti), degene die de schepping beheert, die wordt voorgesteld met knots, werpschijf, schelp en lotus, die als rijdier de vogel Garuda heeft. In velerlei incarnaties (avatar), veelal als mens, verschijnt hij op aarde en treedt dan op als de onderhouder van het evenwicht tussen goed en kwaad. Andere verschijningen van Vihsnu zijn als vis (die de mensheid bij een zondvloed redde), als schildpad, als zwijn, als man-leeuw. Vaak speelt hij de rol van redder van de wereld uit watervloeden en de Balier brengt hem dan ook in verband met zeeverering, de storm, waarvan hij immers de schelp draagt. Men kleurt hem veelal lichtblauw, of groen. Hij wordt door de Baliers met het water, ook wel het irrigatiewater op de rijstvelden, vereenzelvigd. In menselijke gedaante speelt hij een rol in verschillende verhalen (Ramayana) en zijn Ramagestalte vormt het ideaal voor mannelijk schoon bij de Baliers. Op het hoofd draagt hij de priesterlijke hoofdtooi (gelung candi), borst- en priestermes sieren zijn vorstenkleding, terwijl de gele kleur van zijn kleed de gebruikelijke is, evenals in India. Dit beeld behoort tot een groep van 28 beelden (15-156 t/m 15-182b), gezamenlijk een pantheon van Balinese godheden vormend, dat getoond werd op de Nederlandse koloniale afdeling op de wereldtentoonstelling te Parijs in 1900. Speciaal voor deze tentoonstelling heeft C.M. Pleyte, conservator van 's Rijks Etnografisch Museum in Leiden, deze beelden op Bali laten vervaardigen. Met behulp van enkele priesters selecteerde hij de relevante beelden die vervolgens door Balinese houtsnijders werden nagemaakt.
