- Description
- The only women granted access to Deshima were prostitutes. They were called courtesans and were classified according to the clients they saw. In this classification, those who went to see the Dutch were placed at the bottom of the scale. This changed as time went by. The Dutch paid well and the courtesans adopted some of their Western customs, such as drinking coffee and shaking hands.
