- In zijn brieven aan een tante in Amsterdam bedankt de auteur, die tijdelijk in Wageningen woont, voor een door de ontwrichting van het treinverkeer te laat ontvangen verjaardagsbrief. Hij vertelt dat een grote partij metaal zoekgeraakt is, die hij per post heeft verstuurd. Volgens hem zijn de geallieerden bij Maastricht blijven steken. Over de fietsenvordering in Amsterdam heeft hij gehoord. In de toekomst belooft hij meer fruit, waar hij genoeg van heeft, te sturen. Hij praat over een kapotte radio en biedt haar aan hun huis te gebruiken om te douchen. Over het overmaken van zijn salaris doet hij mededelingen. In de omgeving van Wageningen worden Duitse militairen uit Belgiƫ en Frankrijk ingekwartierd. Het is druk in de buurt, er worden veel aanplakbiljetten aangeplakt, er zijn lekke autobanden door haakjes op de weg en razzia's naar gravers voor de IJssellinie. Hij vraagt haar om niet te vergeten hun huur over te maken. Er komen geallieerde vliegtuigen over, die door beschietingen slachtoffers en verwoesting veroorzaken. Ze vliegen door naar Duitsland. Door de beschietingen is er soms geen elektra, gas, water en radio-ontvangst. Hij hoopt dat met de komst van de geallieerden de voedsel- en brandstofsituatie verbetert. Er worden steeds meer zweefvliegtuigen gesignaleerd en Engelsen krijgsgevangen gemaakt. 19 september horen ze in de omgeving veel geschiet en mitrailleurvuur, maar de aangekondigde landing komt niet. Bij Arnhem wordt volgens de radio gevochten. Allerlei geruchten doen de ronde. In zijn laatste brief vertelt hij dat de haveninstallaties in Wageningen, waaronder kranen, fabrieken en schepen onder voortdurend luchtalarm opgeblazen zijn.
