France. For William of Orange ca. 1561
The KB collection has books from the collections of Queen Elizabeth I of England, Catharine de Medici, Louis Napoleon and other famous historical figures that can be recognized by their coat of arms or monogram. None of the bindings, however, appeal to the imagination quite as much as this one, originating from the collection of William of Orange.
The binding shows the Prince’s coat of arms and the insignia of the Order of the Golden Fleece. William had the binding made in Paris around 1560. In comparison with the books of other courtiers his bindings were fairly plain. Transecting lines, which were fashionable patterns for the time, are absent. He had at least 48 titles bound in this way. He must have been very fond of these pieces as when he fled to Germany in 1568 he took them with him in a chest.
