Women in action! > Feminism and the womens movement
Feminism is derived from the Latin word femina, which means woman. The French suffragette activist Hubertine Auclert was the first to use the word feminism in 1880. Feminism is a movement or philosophy that questions the unequal balance of power between men and women. Feminists fight for equality between men and women. The term ‘feminism’ has become synonymous for the women’s movement: the quest for social changes aimed at improving the position of women.
