Exhibitions 1938-2008

A collection of the Centraal Museum

The Centraal Museum in Utrecht was founded in 1838, which makes it the oldest municipal museum in the Netherlands. Already at an early stage, in 1938, the museum began to create photographic records of its exhibitions. Today these records have grown into a collection of thousands of prints, slides, etc. of exhibitions, events and objects.

''Just look, there isn’t there what there is', March – June 1976.

More than 3,750 images from this collection were digitized as part of this project. They are a unique historic illustration not only of the exhibitions in the Centraal Museum in particular, but also of ongoing changes in museum customs in general.
