Promotional photographs of Dutch pop music

A collection of the Allard Pierson. De collecties van de universiteit van Amsterdam

Promotional photographs take up a special place within pop music photography. In these pictures, the performers themselves determine the end result. The photographs are important in conveying the image of the band or performer. They are used for interviews in newspapers or magazines, for illustrations in program booklets for music venues, and of course for the embellishment of record or CD covers. The collection of promotional photographs offers a good overview of Dutch pop music through the years. From the Blue Diamonds to Junkie XL, and from Golden Earring to Osdorp Posse. The collection also charts the development of promotional photographs: from the snapshots made by record companies showing the performers posing as innocently as possible, to pictures of the unruly bands of the 1970s and computer-enhanced photographs of today.
