Monument photography > The Steenbergh Collection

Delft, courtyard Oostindisch HuisThe photographs in the Steenbergh Collection (numbered with prefix ST) were obtained by the RDMZ in 1951.

The collection includes a large number of glass plate negatives of photographs taken by C.J. Steenbergh in the period 1910-1935 for the journal "Buiten". Unfortunately, in a rigorous clearing effort all Steenbergh's negatives that didn’t show a monument were immediately destroyed.

The remaining collection of 2500 photographs is presented here. Made by a very capable photographer with the aim of publication in mind, the prints are almost without exception of high quality. They show various aspects of "monumental Holland", often focusing on the picturesque.

Unfortunately, the precise dates of Steenbergh's negatives are unknown. Whenever possible it is mentioned in which volume and in which issue of "Buiten" they were published.
