Martinus Nijhoff belonged to the generation of 1918, which brought about a renewal in Dutch literature during the years following World War I. His poetry was a guide for his and subsequent generations. As critic for the newspaper Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant and as editor of the magazine De Gids he exercised much influence on Dutch poetry.
The Nijhoff collection of the Literary Museum covers the period from 1827 until his death in 1927. Nijhoff’s private records form the basis of the collection. In the course of time, the collection has been supplemented with documents from other legacies and archives. It includes letters to and from Nijhoff, handwritten documents, typescripts, printer’s proofs and official and personal papers (among which family papers and financial records).
The 1937 manuscript of the collection of poems Het uur U (published in 1941) has been selected for this site (click 'inhoudsopgave' to browse through the document).
