The Dutch Labour Movement till 1918 > The role of the press
All discussions, developments and incidents related to the social question at that time were reflected in the press. Political cartoonist Albert Hahn commented on current events from 1902 until his death in 1918 in thousands of prints. A few of these have become very well known, such as ‘Gansch het raderwerk staat stil...’ (All the gears are frozen; 1903).
Hahn worked with powerful, sweeping contrasts: the capitalist is fat, wears a top hat and smokes a cigar; his worker is scrawny and dressed in rags. Hahn’s prints and caricatures were the journalistic weapons of social democracy.
