- Albina werd omstreeks 1846 gesticht door de duitser August Kappler en vernoemd naar zijn verloofde Alwine. Albina bestond aanvankelijk van de houtexploitatie, later, toen in 1876 aan de Lawa goud werd gevonden, breidde de plaats zich snel uit. Na de eerste wereldoorlog raakte de plaats in verval. De historische Waterkant werd in de binnenlandse oorlog in de jaren 1980 verwoest. Albina heeft een veerverbinding met St. Laurent dat aan de overkant van de Marowijne ligt.
