Common Goldeneye
Garrot, now known as the Common Goldeneye, Bucephala clangula (Linnaeus, 1758).
Common Goldeneyes, like this male painted by Aert Schouman, can be easily spotted in winter on the IJsselmeer and in the waters of Zeeland. The Common Goldeneyes breed in tree hollows alongside the lakes of Finland and Scandinavia. Aert Schouman became particularly well-known for his painted wallpapers richly decorated with animals. Schouman enlivened Huis ten Bosch (residence of Queen Beatrix) for William V with depictions of his menagerie.
