Fish from the scavenger family
Paradentex microdon (Bleeker), a fish from the scavenger family, now known as Gymnocranius microdon (Bleeker, 1851).
Pieter Bleeker, from the Zaanstreek area of the Netherlands, settled in Batavia in 1842 as an army doctor. Alongside his work as doctor, his interest in nature resulted in him giving descriptive accounts of nature in Indonesia. Fish became his speciality. He gave description of many species unknown until then in the Atlas Ichthyologique. This book is considered to be one of the most beautiful books on fish of the 19th century. Bleeker’s very skillfully drawn fish undoubtedly contributed to this appreciation.
