Idol
Circa 5000 BC, wood, hight 13 cm, Willemstad (province of Noord-Brabant)
This wooden sculpture was found in a peat bog during the contruction of the Delta Works. It represents a human figure with a clearly identifiable head.
Only a few of these small sculptures have been found in Europe, because organic materials like wood normally decay fast. It may have been a toy or a shaman's ritual implement.
