Protest!
The news that 427 Amsterdam Jews had been rounded up on 22 and 23 February 1941 made a deep impression on the people of Amsterdam. A reaction was bound to come forth. For some time, there had already been some unrest among the Amsterdam workers. But now, out of solidarity with their Jewish fellow townspeople and because of their indignation at the German measures in the capital, a general strike was called for 25 February 1941.
This call for a strike, which came from a number of members of the illegal Communistische Partij Nederland 'CPN' (Netherlands Communist Party), received a spontaneous and massive response. The communist municipal workers Willem Kraan and Piet Nak played a leading role in getting the strike off the ground. The manifesto calling for the strike was typed and stencilled on Monday 24 February 1941. Members of the Communist Party saw to the distribution.
The manifesto does not mention the date on which the strike was to take place. But the text makes it quite plain that the call had been written immediately after the raid in the Jewish quarter. That night, some 250 workers, most of them members of the CPN, gathered in Noordermarkt square. This pamphlet, of which only a few copies have been kept, has undoubtedly become the best known illegal pamphlet of all the whole occupation years. Its importance is illustrated by the fact that quite a number of Communist Party heavyweights (among whom Paul de Groot) claimed to have written the appeal.
