France. For Jean Grolier ca. 1550
This binding was made of brown calf leather and has been tooled with gold. Parts of the decoration have been accentuated in a kind of paint in the colors black, gray and white. The pattern of transecting ribbons is a characteristic decoration style that was developed during the Renaissance in Italy. The binding, one of a series of five, all with different decorations, was made for the famous French collector Jean Grolier.
There has probably never been a bibliophile in history who appealed to the imagination more than Jean Grolier: Prince of Bibliophiles. As early as 1584 his unique library was described in writings and in the 17th century his bindings were already being collected. The trade also acknowledged the influence of his famous collection and as of the 18th century made mention of the fact that a book had originated from Grolier’s collection.
