When speaking of illegal writings, we often think of books of poetry or art printings stenciled or printed in the greatest secrecy. Sometimes, however, the initiators were regular publishing companies. One of these, Elsevier, asked the historian Jacques Presser to write a book about the Eighty Years’ War. It was meant to give heart to the Dutch people and let those glorious times inspire them to persevere in their resistance to the present occupying forces. Being Jewish, Presser could not publish the book under his own name. The historian B.W. Schaper therefore ‘loaned’ him his name. After the war, the publication appeared again under Presser’s own name.
