Helmet
4th century AD, gilded silver, height: 28,5 cm, de Peel (province of Noord-Brabant)
This gilded silver equestrian helmet, a real showpiece, was found in 1910 by peat cutters in the peat bogs in de Peel. In fact it is only the outside of the helmet, that originally consisted of an iron cap with a leather lining. The helmet had completely fallen apart after its discovery and has been fully restored. The right-hand cheek cover, that was missing, has been replaced.
This parade helmet probably belonged to a high-ranking officer. According to the inscription on the helmet he was in the sixth cavalry unit of Stablesia, a unit that is known from ancient literature. A second inscription mentions the name of the maker and the original weight of the silver plates. Near the helmet, remains of clothes and gear were found, as well as some coins. These indicate that the gear must have ended up in the peat bog around 319 AD. We don't know how these items found their way to the peat bog. Maybe their owner was drowned or they may have been left as an offering to the gods.
