Papaver
In 1878 Hugo de Vries was the first professor of botany to be appointed by the University of Amsterdam. In the last decade of the 19th century he specialized in hereditary properties. His experiments in crossing two poppy varieties – the Papaver somniferum mephisto and the Papaver somniferum ‘danebrog’ – in between 1893 and 1896, produced an unvarying percentage of new plants. As a result of his experiments with poppies, Hugo de Vries rediscovered Mendel’s hereditary theories, which had fallen into oblivion.
