- Description
- In 1931 verblijft Sayers in Parijs, waar hij drie grote wandschilderingen maakt voor de grote ontvangstzaal van het Nederlandsch-Indisch Paviljoen op de Internationale Koloniale Tentoonstelling. Daar ontmoet hij de Hongaarse Olga Stern en met haar als zijn vrouw keert hij dat jaar terug naar Indië en vestigt zich op Bali. Van 1935 tot 1939 woont hij weer op Java. Behalve een kort verblijf in Surabaja en een reis naar Japan in 1935, woont de familie in Batavia. Daar is dit schilderij ontstaan.
