Marsyas or the Enchanted Well (design: Richard Nicolaus Roland Holst).
R.N. Roland Holst was not just anyone. As professor of ‘composition’ at the National Academy of Visual Arts (Rijksacademie van Beeldende Kunsten) in Amsterdam he held an authoritative and leading position in the Dutch art world. This explains why his influence was so great despite the fact that he only had a relatively small oeuvre of 16 posters of which 9 were for theater.
This poster for the Mythic Comedy “Marsyas or the Enchanted Well” is an unusual piece for Roland Holst as his posters were generally built up around a tight vertical symmetry with the characters depicted in the center. In this poster he chose to leave the center empty and place the mountain stream and crouching faun along the sides.
